Custom Display Boxes

Put More Products in Front of Shoppers for Less

Custom display boxes are a low-cost way to get products in front of shoppers. One box holds multiple products, then converts into a ready-made retail display when it reaches the store.

Colorful point-of-purchase display boxes several advantages:

  • Low packaging cost per product. One display box holds multiple units, so the cost of the packaging is spread across every product inside.

  • You control how your products are presented. The retailer simply opens the box and quickly converts it to a point-of-purchase display where the products sell themselves.

  • Shoppers see the whole assortment at once. Colors, flavors, styles, and varieties are presented together in one eyeful, making it easy for shoppers to see their choices and pick a favorite.

  • They encourage impulse purchases. Point-of-purchase displays put products in front of shoppers who may not have been considering them at all, creating an opportunity for an unplanned purchase.

  • Retailers have a reason to put them in more places. Strong sales encourage retailers to place them in more locations throughout the store—or even alongside complementary products where they'll prompt additional purchases.

Once set up, the display box quietly makes a relentless soft sell to every shopper who passes by.

When Should You Consider Custom Display Boxes?

Custom display boxes are a good choice when:

  • You have small products shoppers can easily pick up, examine, and purchase on impulse

  • Individual packaging is too expensive, and several products can share one display package

  • You have multiple SKUs, colors, flavors, or styles that benefit from organized, side-by-side presentation

  • You have commodity products that lend themselves to a gravity-feed display

  • You want the box to suggest where it should be sold. A point-of-purchase display naturally encourages retailers to place it in high-traffic areas where shoppers will see it.

If your products are easy to browse, pick up, and buy on the spot, a custom display box puts the packaging to work selling them.

Putting your product where curiosity rules.

Paperboard Thickness Chart

Mobile Box Paper Thickness Chart(1).png

What's a Good Paper Thickness for My Box?

  • 16pt  (0.016″ ≈ slightly thicker than a business card)

    • Best for very small product boxes.

    • Rule of thumb: footprint (floor of the box) of about 1″ × 1″ or smaller.

  • 18pt (0.018″ ≈ just under credit-card thickness)

    • Strong enough for most cosmetics, food, and shelf packaging.

    • Cost-effective and versatile — the “everyday” choice for custom boxes.

    • Rule of thumb: footprint of about 2.75″ × 2.75″ or smaller.

  • 24pt  (0.024″ ≈ credit-card thickness)

    • Stiffer and more rigid, with a premium feel in hand.

    • Ideal for larger, heavier, or higher-end products where strength and presentation matter.

    • Rule of thumb: footprint of about 3″ × 3″ or larger.

Cardstock.... or Paperboard?

The paper behind your packaging matters

You may have seen box specs like “18pt cardstock” online — but not all 18pt paper is created equal.

Cardstock: A thick paper used for crafts, postcards, and invitations. It’s cheaper and works for lighter packaging — but it lacks the stiffness and durability needed for most product boxes.

Paperboard: A stiffer material engineered specifically for packaging. It folds cleanly, glues reliably, and holds its shape to protect your product — and your brand — on the shelf.

The key is knowing what you’re buying. In retail, your product box is what closes the sale — so it needs to perform and look its best. That’s why we use a quality paperboard — so your packaging doesn’t just hold together, it helps sell what’s inside.

The film strip above gives you a peek at a few of the folding carton styles you'll find on our Custom Product Boxes page.

When the Box Does the Merchandising

Custom display boxes can be built in several different ways, but they all have one thing in common: the box itself becomes part of how the products are presented and sold.

Most printed display boxes are auto-lock bottom, snap-lock bottom, or roll-end tuck top carton designs customized to become point-of-purchase displays.

The box opens into a colorful retail display, often with a large advertising header and tear-away or fold-over panels that expose the products inside.

Gravity-feed displays take a different approach. Products are loaded or stacked from the top and gravity feeds them into an open product area at the bottom front of the box. As shoppers remove products, more automatically drop down to take their place.

Each style has its advantages.

Which one works best depends on what you're putting in it and how you want your products displayed.

Display Box Options

Display boxes can be customized around the products they hold, how shoppers access them, and how you want them presented at the point of purchase.

  • Add tear-away or fold-over panels to convert the box into an open retail display

  • Add custom die-cut shapes and folds to the lid so when folded back as the advertising header, it creates distinctive shapes, product-name cutouts, skylines, and other branded features

  • Use tapered or angled sides to improve product visibility and give the display a more open appearance

  • Add section dividers or partitions to organize different products, flavors, colors, or varieties

For gravity-feed displays

  • Add inside partitions to create separate channels so several different products can feed through the same display

Build the displays around both your product and the way you want shoppers to interact with it.
