Custom Crash Lock Bottom Boxes
Fold. Lock. Crash.
Strong, Practical, and Retail-Ready
Custom Crash Lock Bottom Boxes
Crash lock bottom boxes, also known as snap-lock bottoms, are a good choice when you need more strength and carrying ability than a standard tuck end box can provide. They're still a tuck top style of box, but because of how the base is built, snap-lock bottoms distribute product weight better and create a more secure floor than a tuck end box.
Short of moving to corrugated packaging, only an auto lock bottom box can generally carry more weight because it uses a glued base—but that added strength comes at a higher cost. Crash lock bottoms work well for light to moderately heavy products, especially products with a wider footprint, and they work especially well as presentation boxes because they sit flat and stable on a retail shelf.
In terms of carrying ability, snap-lock bottoms fall between tuck end boxes and auto lock bottom boxes.
…And the “Crash”?
A crash lock box gets its name from how the bottom panels come together to form the base.
The side and back panels fold inward and interlock in a woven pattern. Then the front panel, or “tongue,” folds down over that base and is pushed through—or “crashes” through—the interlocked weave into the inside of the box, locking the floor in place.
Don’t worry—it’s much easier than it sounds.

When Should You Consider Crash Lock Bottom Boxes?
Crash lock bottom boxes are a good choice if you have:
Products that need more support than a standard tuck end box
Light to moderately heavy retail products
Wider products that benefit from a stable floor
Cost-sensitive packaging where an auto lock bottom may be more than you need
Fulfillment processes where a few extra seconds of box setup is acceptable
Balancing Cost and Assembly Speed
Crash lock bottom boxes and auto lock bottom boxes can often handle the same types of products. Both are tuck top box styles; the main difference is how the bottom of the box is constructed.
Auto lock bottom boxes arrive with the base pre-glued, so the floor forms automatically when the carton is opened. Crash lock bottoms require the bottom panels to be folded and locked during setup, which takes a few extra seconds but reduces manufacturing cost.
For many products, this trade-off makes crash lock bottoms a practical and economical alternative.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If your product needs more support than a tuck end box but does not require the convenience of a pre-glued auto bottom, a crash lock bottom box is often the better choice.

Cardstock.... or Paperboard?
The paper behind your packaging matters
You may have seen box specs like “18pt cardstock” online — but not all 18pt paper is created equal.
• Cardstock: A thick paper used for crafts, postcards, and invitations. It’s cheaper and technically works for light packaging — but it lacks the stiffness and durability needed for most product boxes.
• Paperboard: A stiffer material engineered specifically for packaging. It folds cleanly, glues reliably, and holds its shape to protect your product — and your brand — on the shelf.
The key is knowing what you’re buying. In retail, your product box is what closes the sale — so it needs to perform and look its best. That’s why we use a quality paperboard — so your packaging doesn’t just hold together, it helps sell what’s inside.
