Buying Product Packaging Online - The Illusion of Choice
The “custom box” you’re seeing? It’s what the vendor wants you to see.
Search for custom product packaging online, and you’ll land on pages filled with boxes labeled for your product — “custom serum boxes,” “skincare boxes,” “vape boxes,” “soap packaging,” and more.
It looks like variety—but it’s really not. And while the boxes vary in dimensions as you would expect, you’ll notice they’re all the same style. Most are simply tuck end box packaging—a basic folding carton design—renamed to capture your search.
It’s the packaging vendor showing you exactly what you expect to see.
So what looks like a wide set of packaging options is often just a single box style—shown under different names to match what you searched for.
The “skincare box” you’re viewing? It’s the same custom printed tuck box you saw on the skincare page. And the tincture page. And the vitamin page. Only the label has changed.
But there are other choices. You just need to know where to look.
Folding Cartons - The Backbone of Product Packaging
Most of these “product boxes” are built from folding cartons—packaging specifically designed for retail product packaging. They’re a family of box styles with a range of options, giving you different ways to display your products.
From cosmetics and supplements to food and pet care, nearly all the boxes you see on shelves are just different folding carton designs.
So instead of searching for “beard oil boxes” or “soap boxes,” which limits your choices, look at folding carton box styles to see all your options—that’s how it’s done in industry. And you can put your own label on it.
A lot of the sites you visit offer an emporium-style buying experience—a one-stop shop for boxes, labels, bags, tape, banners, and even t-shirts. Similar to a Target department store, it’s a commodity-style model designed to carry a little bit of everything. A number of distributors operate this way.
And sometimes what appear to be different companies are really different storefronts presenting the same choices under different branding. And a lot of the packaging is simply contracted overseas. Printing overseas allows them to remain competitive at home.
Many of these sites have a familiar feel to them, and for good reason — because you've been there before.
It’s a very different experience than working with a company focused solely on folding carton packaging.
