    How to Measure a Box

Make sure your box quote is accurate by measuring in the right order:
    Length × Width × Depth

Depth always goes last. That little detail matters - swapping dimensions can throw off your cost, or even leave you with the wrong size box.
  • 4 Easy Steps to Measure ANY Box

Getting the dimensions right is critical to getting accurate sizes and costs. Length x Width X Depth refer to the inside of the box. The key to getting dimensions right is determining the slide - this will always be the depth.

    1. Determine the slide direction:
Find the slide direction first - this will be the depth of the box.

    2. Measure the Length:
With the opening facing you, measure the longest side (left to right).

    3. Measure the Width:

Measure the shorter side (front to back), still with the box facing you.

    4. Add a Little Extra:
Add about 1/16" to each measurement so your box isn’t too tight—this makes packing much easier.

    What is Paperboard?

Paperboard is a stiff, thick paper made for product packaging. It's the paper of choice for product boxes you see on store shelves.

We use an SBS paperboard for our printed boxes - it's a high-quality white coated paper with excellent print and foldability qualities.

    SBS Paperboard is:

    • Measured in “points” (pt)—the higher the number, the thicker and sturdier the box.

    • Strong, but not heavy: Protects your products without extra weight.

    • Prints beautifully: Shows off your logo and colors in sharp detail.

    • Easy to recycle: Good for your brand and the environment.

Printed Retail Packaging That Just Gets it Done

A versatile, budget-friendly product box widely used in retail, giving brands plenty of space to tell their story and connect with shoppers

Tuck top boxes are the everyday folding cartons you see on store shelves in almost every aisle. Their versatility makes them a good fit for countless products—from health and beauty items to household goods, food, and beyond.

With a simple design that’s easy to put together and cost-efficient to produce, they also give brands broad panels for graphics and messaging that speak to their audience.

These qualities make custom tuck top boxes one of the most widely used styles in retail packaging.

Retail Packaging That Hangs

Packaging Designed for Impulse Shoppers

Hanging retail products give you more display options—and more opportunities to sell - by placing products at eye level, near checkout, or even in multiple store locations.

More placements mean more shopper attention and higher sales.
Products like polybag header cards and five panel hanger boxes are built for hanging, making them a favorite for promotions and impulse items.

And using header cards for retail packaging is a low-cost way to get poly bagged products in front of shoppers.

Even tuck boxes can get in the game by adding a simple hang tab – ask us about it!

Retail header cards are a cost effective way to display polybagged products.

Popular for frozen foods and multipack bundling, packaging sleeves give you all the benefits of a custom printed box at a lower cost. And sometimes a custom printed sleeve is the only practical way to package a product.

It's the Details That Count

“Expensive” Packaging = A Quality Product – Really?

Shoppers often equate packaging that looks expensive with product quality. But does expensive packaging always mean a better product? Sometimes it does—but often it doesn’t.

This gray area is where creative packaging designers thrive. By tapping into what shoppers associate with quality, luxury, and exclusivity, they build packaging that triggers those perceptions.

And it’s these subtle design cues that create the illusion of quality.

A soft touch coating, embossed logo, foil accent, or matte UV finish adds depth and dimension, giving retail packaging a high-end feel before it’s even picked up. These subtle signals of quality work on shoppers without them even realizing it, making printed product boxes feel more premium and desirable on the shelf.

It’s all about putting the right touch in the right place—and you don’t have to spend a lot to make it happen.

Creating retail packaging designs that connect with your audience can be a challenge, but the payoff is increased sales and higher profits.

Accents & Finishes That Make the Difference

Like everything else in life, it’s the details that make the difference. In retail packaging, it’s those small flourishes that catch the eye and get shoppers to pick it up—a critical first step to making the sale.

The good news is you don’t have to spend a lot to create packaging that attracts. There are cost‑effective finishes that give packaging that extra pop:

Spot Gloss & Matte UV Coating Use gloss or matte effects on specific areas to add depth and contrast. Spot gloss draws attention to logos or key graphics, while matte UV creates a smooth, premium feel. And adding spot UV's are a great low-cost way to upscale packaging.

Soft‑Touch Coating A velvety texture that oozes quality the moment someone picks up the product.

Foil Stamping Shiny metallic foils—gold, silver, or custom colors—catch the light, and the eye. Metallic foils -there's just nothing like it.

Embossing & Debossing Raised or recessed designs add texture and dimension, giving packaging a tactile feel shoppers associate with quality.

Specialty Laminates Unique textures and holographic effects create dramatic, high‑end looks that stop shoppers in their tracks.

Want to stand out on the shelf? For more dramatic effects, try layering finishes—combining different print finishes to add depth and texture to your retail boxes - ask how we can help!

Retail Boxes Are Really Folding Carton Boxes

Most retail product packaging you see are actually custom folding cartons.

They were invented in the 1800s specifically for retail products and are still the gold standard today. High resolution printing gives folding cartons the sharp graphics and vibrant colors that attract shoppers, without driving up packaging costs.

And it’s not just retail—folding cartons are the go-to packaging choice for most products.

Printed paperboard boxes are the natural, eco friendly alternative to plastic or rigid packaging.

Did you know?

Brand loyalty is powerful. Research shows about 60% of shoppers buy brands they’re comfortable with, rarely considering competitors—even when they cost more.

Barcodes started as a bullseye. Two Drexel University students designed the first barcode in 1952—a circular pattern inspired by Morse code so it could be scanned at any angle, later evolving into today’s barcodes.

Premium packaging boosts perceived value. Consumers rate products in premium packaging about 45% higher in value compared to basic packaging—and are willing to pay up to 30% more to get it.

Packaging colors influence buying decisions. Studies show over 60% of shoppers choose products based on packaging color, which is why brands carefully pick shades that stand out and match their message.

Shopper Perceptions

How Custom Product Boxes Persuade Shoppers Without Saying a Word

Your Only Link on the Shelf

Quite often in retail, your printed packaging is the only link between you and a potential customer. If it doesn’t catch their eye or give them a reason to trust your brand, you lose the sale before your product ever gets a chance.

Great packaging does more than just protect what’s inside—it’s your first impression on the shelf. The right design grabs attention, tells your story, and helps your product stand out when it matters most.

How Much Does Packaging Really Influence Buying Decisions?

Shoppers make decisions quickly—often guided by well-placed messaging and subtle cues built into packaging. Those silent signals shape perceptions in just seconds.

Take a Step Back Before You Design

That’s why it’s worth pausing before you pick a box style or start designing. Think about how your packaging will be perceived and the message it sends.

How Do Custom Boxes Persuade Shoppers—Without Saying a Word?

It’s all about the silent signals built into your packaging: design, colors, and finishes that shape expectations before anyone even reads a line of copy. Together, these cues shape that split second decision to reach or move on.

Read on to find out how!

... It's All About Persuasion!

Quick Decisions......The key is to connect what shoppers believe quality looks and feels like—and reflect that in your packaging. It signals what your product is and why it’s worth their time and money, and it has to do it fast.

That means more than what you say and how you say it—it’s the quiet signals, the subtle signs of quality that shape how shoppers perceive your product before a single word is read.

Here’s how effective retail packaging makes that connection:

Step 1: Attract Attention
If shoppers don’t pick it up, your product never gets a chance. High visibility custom retail boxes are your first opportunity to connect on the shelf.

Step 2: Persuade With Benefits, Not Just Features
Great packaging speaks directly to your audience by emphasizing benefits, not just specifications. There’s a reason experts say, “Benefits sell, specifications tell.” The best retail packaging shows how your product improves life, not just what’s inside.

Step 3: Create Perceived Value
Shoppers often link packaging quality to product quality. Premium products frequently feature soft‑touch coatings, metallic foils, and high‑gloss UV finishes—accents that give packaging a sense of elegance.

They have come to associate these finishes with premium products and subconsciously transfer those perceptions to the product itself. It’s a common tactic that boosts both sales and the price shoppers are willing to pay.

Cosmetics prove the point: dazzling finishes and high end materials aren’t there for fun—they pay for themselves by driving sales and setting products apart.

That’s why it pays to think about what your retail box packaging says long before it reaches the shelf.

Secondary Packaging for Retail

When you need a little bit more!

While it may seem like overkill at first—adding printed box packaging to an already packaged product—it’s more common than you think!

Sleeve It to Believe It

Adding Color & Appetite Appeal

Need to add a splash of color to frozen or ready‑made meals? Printed box sleeves to the rescue - they slide over plain trays and bowls, instantly making them look more appetizing.

Shoppers see what’s inside, how to prepare it, and key details like ingredients and nutrition—all in one glance that helps get your product in their basket.

Stack, Pack & Sell

Boost sales with retail-ready bundles

Want to move more product or create value packs? Custom printed sleeves and boxes make retail‑ready multi packs and bundles easy.

Multi packs group multiples of the same product—like a three‑pack of frozen entrées—while bundles pair different products—like a lotion and matching hand soap.

Both boost sales, clear inventory faster, and appeal to value‑minded shoppers looking for convenience and savings.

Squeezing a Bit More Out of the Tube

Box packaging for squeeze tubes and bottles

“Why would I want to add a box to my already packaged skin care tubes?” Well, if you want to stand out on a highly competitive retail shelf, this is the way to do it.

Many manufacturers using plastic and aluminum squeeze tubes for skin creams and lotions add retail boxes for exactly this reason—and to give their products a more premium appearance.

It’s common in cosmetics: tubed products in custom printed boxes for shelf presence.

  • Increases Visibility – Space for logos, benefits, and your product story.
  • Builds Consumer Confidence – Ingredients, instructions, and certifications are right where shoppers expect them.
  • Creates a Premium Look – A boxed tube stands out on a shelf of unboxed tubes.
  • Adds Functionality – Easier to include inserts and tamper‑evident seals.

Sleeves and multi‑packs do more than package—they sell product. We have extensive experience with secondary product packaging. Give us a call and let’s talk!

The Glamour Wars

When the shelf becomes the stage

Still think secondary packaging is overkill? Not if you plan to win on the retail shelf.
Just look at the toothpaste aisle—it’s a real showdown at the OK Corral with holographic boxes, sparkling gels, and loud, in-your-face colors.

Toothpaste isn’t glamorous, but its packaging sure is.
Let’s face it: toothpaste isn’t a big decision. The box catches the eye, nudges the choice, and gets it tossed into the basket.

That’s the power of secondary packaging—turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

And standing out on the shelf is the name of the game.

What's the Difference?

Traditional offset printing is designed for large orders.

Fast and economical, but less flexible for quick changes or small-volume needs.

That’s where digital printing comes in.

With digitally printed packaging, you get crisp graphics, vibrant colors, and premium finishes—even for smaller runs.

However, digital printing does have its tradeoffs. While it’s ideal for quantities under 1,000, costs can be higher for very low volumes.

That’s why we set a 500-box minimum—it’s the sweet spot for balancing quality, flexibility, and cost.

Short-Run Custom Printed Retail Boxes

Need custom printed retail packaging without heavy setup costs?
Our short‑run box printing program gives you premium packaging for smaller runs—flexible, fast, and retail‑ready.

Not every product launch needs tens of thousands of boxes. That’s where our short‑run retail box program comes in. Perfect for smaller volumes and multi‑SKU runs, it delivers the same high‑quality look and feel of large production runs—without the heavy setup costs.

That makes it perfect for seasonal promotions, limited‑time offers, or testing new product lines without over‑ordering. With a 500‑box minimum, you get custom printed packaging that’s right‑sized and economical.

Short runs are ideal for startups and small brands that need retail‑ready packaging without large‑volume commitments:

  • Startups launching new products for retail shelves

  • Small‑volume or specialty retail product lines

  • Limited‑time retail promotions and seasonal campaigns

  • Prototyping and market testing before a retail rollout

How Do We Make These Things!

Cookie Cutting by The Numbers

Meet the giant cookie cutter of the packaging world—the Bobst die-cutting machine! Just like the cookie cutter you use to press out perfect hearts or stars from dough, this machine stamps out printed product box shapes (“blanks”) from big sheets of paperboard.

With each satisfying “ka-chunk” of the machine, out pops a sheet of flat box blanks with all the right cuts, folds, and flaps—ready to be folded and glued into finished boxes. That’s how we turn big, flat sheets of paperboard into the custom printed boxes you see on store shelves.

Watch a Tuck End Box being Folded & Glued

High-speed folder-gluer machines are the backbone of modern packaging—they fold and glue just about any style or size of folding carton box in a flash.

Once the machine is set up production moves fast—turning carton blanks—die-cut boxes before they’ve been glued—into finished boxes at high speed.
